REGULATIONS FOR BIOLOGY COURSE
1st year DDS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

x1.xThe biology course consists of:

   a)xlectures – which describe selected aspects of general and medical ecology, interactions between different populations in ecosystem with a particular emphasis to pathogen-host (human) relationship which is a base of co-adaptation of both the human and pathogen during the evolution process

   b)xseminars – which describe selected aspects of general/medical genetics (10 hours);

   c)xpractical classes – which discuss some issues concerning biology, epidemiology and diagnostics of human parasites, host-parasite relationship and general epidemiology (15 hours).
x2.xAll classes (lectures, seminars, practical) are obligatory for students, however the presence of students will be controlled (checked) during seminars and practical classes only.

x3.xAll meetings (lectures, seminars and practical) start always on time.

x4.xLectures #1-5 and 10 will be conducted in a traditional way in Coll. Chmiela (lecture room 105) whereas lectures #6-9 will be held remotely on the TEAMS platform. All seminars and practical are realized in the Department of Biology and Medical Parasitology (Coll. Chmiela, room 109)..

x5.xAll the important information can be displayed from the Department's website: www.parasite.ump.edu.pl (handouts, short summing up of seminars and lectures, presentations of seminars and lectures as pdf files with a password).

x6.xThe course coordinator is dr. Piotr NOWOSAD (PhD). He can be contacted:
    by phone – 854-68-20;

   practical classes, to the teacher responsible for the particular student's group.

   b)xin the case described in point 7, the student is obligated:

   to discuss the content of the essay with the course coordinator.
x9.xStudent who has absence cannot obtain a “credit” of Biology course.

11.xClothing (coats, jackets, etc.) should be left in the cloakroom.
12.xIt is forbidden to use cell phones during the classes.

13.xStudents are financially responsible for microscopes and preparations; for the destruction of a permanent preparation, student pays PLN 100 to the account of the Medical University (it is only 1/6 of the value of the preparation!) and show the proof of payment to the teacher. In the case of microscope damage student is obligated to cover all the costs of repair according to the bill issued.

14.xDuring the practical classes an epidemiological procedure is in place to prevent the spread of COVID; during practical classes students are required wearing appropriate dress code (lab coat).

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

15.xThree independent partial tests are planned during obligatory classes::

   a)xtest #1 is based exclusively on seminar topics; it is a one-choice tests (40 questions);

   b)xtest #2 is based on practical classes; it is a one-choice tests (40 questions);

   c)xtest #3 is based exclusively on lecture topics; it is a one-choice tests (40 questions).
16.xStudents receive the “credit” in Biology course when they pass independent three tests. To pass the test student has to gather min. 24 points separately of each test (60% of possible points).

17.xAbsence during the partial test results in zero points (unsatisfactory mark).
18.xStudents who fail test(s) goes into a resit mode (basic and general) which applies to failed test(s) only.

19.xThe basic resit mode involves:

   a)xresit of test #1 (seminars) which is conducted in oral form by the teachers responsible for each topic.
   b)xresit of test #2 (practical) which is run in oral form by the teacher responsible for the particular group;
   b)xresit of test #3 (lectures) that is realized in written form by the course coordinator.

20.xStudent has the right to improve a negative grade of each failed test twice.

21.xStudent who fail basic resits mode is obligated to take the general resit test which is based on the whole material (50 questions based on lectures, seminars and practical classes). In a case when the general resit test will be failed student can attend the retake of this test only once.
